Het Spiritueel Filmhuis is een platform voor allerlei spiritueel getinte films, die bezoekers van deze website kunnen inspireren. Ik heb hier films opgenomen met thema's uit alle Wijsheidstradities, die via Youtube of Facebook bekeken kunnen worden. Toevallig heb ik zelf veel films uit de Aziatische culturen en tradities, maar het is niet mijn bedoeling het hiertoe te beperken.

DVD   Amongst White Clouds

DVD   Blessings   -  The Tsoknyi Nangchen Nuns of Tibet

In the summer of 2005, renowned Buddhist teacher, Tsoknyi Rinpoche III, accompanied by a handful of western women students, traveled to the Nangchen region in Eastern Tibet, a remote nomadic region. The purpose of the trip was to meet the Tsoknyi Nangchen Nuns - 3000 remarkable women - who live and practice the ancient yogic traditions in nunneries and hermitages scattered across this remote, mountainous region. These traditions initiated in the 1800s by the first Tsoknyi Rinpoche, who envisioned a time when these women would become some of the most accomplished spiritual practitioners in the world.
Despite all 40 nunneries being destroyed during China’s Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, a handful of survivors kept their practices alive and emerged to rebuild their sanctuaries by hand … stone by

stone. Now, the wisdom tradition of the nuns is once again vital and growing.
Narrated by Richard Gere, the video explores the fascinating world of the nuns as seen through the eyes of the western women practitioners who are connecting with the often strange, but hauntingly familiar, world of Tibetan Buddhism.
Compelling interviews with Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo and Tsultrim Allione place the practice Nangchen nuns in the context of the largely male dominated history of Buddhism in Tibet.

DVD   Brilliant Moon

Brilliant Moon: Glimpses of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche chronicles the life of writer, poet and meditation master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, one of Tibet's most revered 20th-century Buddhist teachers. He was an inspiration to all who encountered him, and his many students throughout the world included the Dalai Lama and the King of Bhutan. Two of his admirers are Richard Gere and Lou Reed, who provide the narration for his dangerous journey out of China and the subsequent spread of his influence around the world.

Written and Directed by Neten Chokling, director of Milarepa and a close student of Khyentse Rinpoche, and filmed in Tibet, India, Bhutan, the United States and Nepal, Brilliant Moon uses animation, unseen archival footage and photos along with new interviews of

DVD   the Buddha – The Story of Siddharta

The Buddha, a two-hour documentary by Emmy Award-winner David Grubin, tells the storty of the Indian sage who attained enlightenment as he sat beneath a fig tree two-and-a-half millennia ago.
The Buddha never claimed to be God or God’s emissary on earth. He was a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, found a serenity that he taught others to find also.
With original animation woven throughout. The Buddha draws upon paintings and sculptures across two millennia as well as scenes in India today that echo the Buddha’s world of long ago. Into Great Silence is de eerste film ooit over het leven in La Grande Chartreuse, de vestiging van de legendarische Kartuizer Orde in de Franse Alpen. De monniken leven aan de hand van eeuwenoude regels en rituelen. De Kartuizer Orde is de meest gesloten orde van de rooms-katholieke kerk en is bijna helemaal verborgen voor de buitenwereld. Into Great Silence is een zeer nauwkeurige, gedeeltelijke stille meditatie over het kloosterleven in zijn meest pure vorm. Geen muziek, behalve de liederen in het klooster, geen interviews, geen commentaar.

Het Tibetaanse Dodenboek is een mysterieus geschrift dat in de achtste eeuw werd geschreven door de Indiase boeddhist Padmasambavha. Eeuwenlang lag het boekwerk begraven in de Himalaya totdat het in de vijftiende eeuw herontdekt werd.
Deel 1 beschrijft de esoterische reis van de ziel van een dode man, vanaf zijn sterven tot en met de hergeboorte na 49 dagen.
In Deel 2 volgen we een oude Tibetaanse monnik en zijn leerling nadat zij de begrafenis van een dorpsgenoot hebben bijgewoond. De boodschap van de film: dood brengt ook vreugde en bevrijding.

DVD KAOS

Sicilië zoals beschreven door Luigi Pirandello, gezien door de ogen van de broers Taviani, twee van de meest visionaire filmmakers van Italië. Met sympathie voor de kleine mensen uit deze vertellingen tonen ze de magie, het lijden en de schoonheid van Sicilië.

De rode draad tussen de vijf verschillende verhalen is een kraai met een belletje om zijn nek, die over het prachtige Siciliaanse landschap vliegt. Een tijdloos meesterwerk dat volop Siciliaanse authenticiteit ademt.


DE 5 VERTELLING IN KAOS
De film begint met een aantal mannen die een raaf te pakken hebben. Deze raaf wordt een bel om de nek gebonden, en het beeld van deze raaf verbindt de vijf delen.
1] DE ANDERE ZOON
De andere zoon gaat over een moeder van wie twee zoons naar de Verenigde Staten zijn geëmigreerd. Ze probeert (als analfabete) brieven te schrijven, maar hoort niets van haar zoons. Er is echter een derde zoon, die gewoon in de buurt is. Van hem wil zij echter niets weten. Daar blijkt een geheim achter te zitten, dat wordt onthuld in flashbacks naar 1848.
2] MAANZIEK
Maanziek gaat over een jonge vrouw die trouwt met een man die maanziek blijkt te zijn. De man probeert het huwelijk te redden door de komst van een knappe jongen bij volle maan toe te staan.
3] DE KRUIK
Don Lollò bestelt een uitzonderlijk grote kruik voor zijn olijfolie in een goed oogstjaar. De kruik breekt echter vrijwel meteen. Een reparateur wordt ingehuurd, die met heel bijzondere lijm de kruik moet repareren. Hij doet dat, maar blijkt uiteindelijk in de kruik gevangen te zitten en er niet meer uit te kunnen. Don Lollò weigert de kruik weer te breken om de reparateur te bevrijden. Deze bespeelt de onderdanen van Don Lollò echter zodanig, dat hij toch uit woede de kruik kapotslaat.
4] REQUIEM
Requiem gaat over een dorpje waarvan de inwoners, die zich illegaal op een landgoed hebben gevestigd, niet wordt toegestaan om in hun dorp mensen te begraven. De nakende dood van een van de stichters leidt tot strubbelingen waarbij ook de carabinieri betrokken worden.
5] GESPREK MET MIJN MOEDER
Hierin voert de schrijver een gesprek met zijn moeder tijdens een fictief bezoek aan zijn ouderlijk huis, vele jaren na haar dood. Zij vertelt over haar bezoek per boot aan haar naar Malta verbannen vader.

DVD   The Knowledge of Healing

The new documentary THE KNOWLEDGE OF HEALING is an illuminating examination of Tibetan medicine, a practice which has developed over two millennia into a modern day successful method of healing that rivals western medical practices.

Unlike Western medicine, based on biochemistry, Tibetan medical thinking (which is strongly rooted in Buddhist principles) views the human body as governed by an elaborately organized system of energies flowing through a network of channels. In the 12th century, the Gyüshi (Knowledge of Healing) was created, a text codifying this intricate system. The medications used comprise herbs, roots, minerals, etc. After flourishing for centuries, most Tibetan medical schools were destroyed by the Chinese in the 1950's and 1960's, and many physicians were executed.

Speaking from exile, the Dalai Lama argues for the value of Tibetan medicine, while his personal physician Dr. Tenzin Choedrak describes the principles behind it. We follow physicians in India and Siberia treating patients for a variety of ailments from paralysis to heart disease, and meet researchers in Israel and Switzerland to see how western clinical studies are testing the effectiveness of Tibetan medicine.

Gruwelijke ervaringen en hartverscheurende verhalen werden uitgewisseld tussen de mensen uit Palestina en van Israël om tot begrip te komen voor elkaars leed.

Rond Memorial Day, 11 september 2003 is hij in Washington gevolgd. Hij heeft er les gegeven aan Amerikaanse congresleden over het thema “Leven in aandacht”. Zo probeert hij in het centrum van de wereldmacht zijn vredesboodschap over te brengen.

Nocturne Indien

Mysterieuze en fascinerende film van Alain Corneau over de spirituele ontdekkingsreis van een jonge Fransman in India.

De reis van de jonge Rossignol begint met de zoektocht naar zijn oude vriend, die in Bombay is verdwenen. De Franse regisseur Alain Corneau maakte met Nocturne Indien een dramatische thriller met een intieme toon, zoals we die kennen van Eric Rohmer en Jean-Luc Godard. De sensuele fotografie en muziek geven bovendien een prachtig beeld van de schoonheid van de Indiase cultuur en natuur. Corneau overleed in 2010 op 67-jarige leeftijd, vlak voordat zijn laatste film Crime d’amour werd uitgebracht.

The first occasion was inspired by Lama Tenzin's wish to return to the homeland he had fled as a 22-year-old Buddhist monk. Tibet has changed dramatically since the Chinese invasion of 1949, and not for the better: an estimated 1.2 million Tibetans have died and all but 13 of the country's 6,000 monasteries have been destroyed. Yet Lama Tenzin had reason to risk a return: to find his family he had not seen in more than 40 years.
"As we entered Tibet . . . we were very conscious of the danger," recounts Paul Horn. "Refugees advised Lama Tenzin to wear western clothes and not to speak Tibetan in public. We were not to mention our plans to film a documentary. Several weeks earlier, a Tibetan had been sentenced to 18 years in prison for videotaping local folk dancers."
Horn's own quest was to play his flute in the legendary Potala Palace, an architectural marvel built in the 1600's, and once the winter home of the Dalai Lamas.
Sacred Tibet chronicles the realization of these dreams, and after Lama Tenzin's death, follows the 71-year-old Horn on a second journey; a pilgrimage around Mt. Kailash, a holy place venerated by four religions and billions of people, yet visited by only a hardy few. Horn brings us along, amid peaks and passes 15,000 to 19,000 feet high, in honor of his friend. The program ends with His Holiness the Dali Lama commenting on Tibet and the current situation under Chinese rule.

DVD   Tokyo Monogatari

Tokyo Monogatari (東京物語, Tōkyō Monogatari) is een Japanse speelfilm uit 1953 van de Japanse filmregisseur Yasujiro Ozu. In Nederland en België werd de film in het verleden soms ook wel De reis naar Tokio genoemd. De film is in de Angelsaksische wereld vooral bekend onder de vertaalde titel Tokyo Story. De mannelijke hoofdrol wordt gespeeld door Ozu's vast acteur Chishu Ryu.

Tokyo Monogatari is een psychologisch familiedrama waarin de verhoudingen tussen de oude en nieuwe generatie, met name die van bejaarde ouders en hun volwassen kinderen, centraal staan. De film is verder vooral bekend vanwege de sobere, eenvoudige, minimalistische en expressionistische manier van filmen. De film wordt door veel critici beschouwd als de beste film van Ozu, en wordt door kenners gezien als een van de beste films ooit gemaakt. 

Dit blijkt onder andere uit een derde plaats in de lijst van beste films aller tijden, opgesteld door het Britse filmtijdschrift Sight & Sound.

Verhaal
Het bejaarde echtpaar Shūkichi (72) en Tomi (68) Hirayama gaat hun kinderen in Tokio opzoeken. Zelf wonen zij in Onomichi, waar ook hun jongste dochter Kyoko nog woont. De reis naar Tokio duurt tot de volgende dag aangezien de film speelt in de tijd dat er nog geen Shinkansen (netwerk van hogesnelheidslijnen) was, en is dan ook vermoeiend.

Eenmaal in Tokio aangekomen kunnen ze blijven logeren bij hun oudste zoon, Kōichi, die dokter is. Zoals later zal blijken valt deze baan de vader lichtelijk tegen: hij had meer verwacht. De zoons van Kōichi moeten niets van opa en oma hebben, maar ze worden wel warm welkom geheten, en de andere kinderen - hun dochter Shige en schoondochter Noriko - komen ook langs.

De volgende dag begint het al moeilijker te worden. Opa en oma zouden worden meegenomen naar het theater, maar doordat een jonge patiënt hulp behoeft gaat dit niet door. Opa en oma blijven wachten, en blijven zodoende de hele dag bij hun schoondochter en bij de kleinkinderen (die nog altijd niets van ze moeten hebben). Ook de dag erna blijkt moeilijk: dochter Shige, die van de kinderen pa en ma het minst een warm hart schijnt toe te dragen, vraagt schoonzus Noriko om voor de ouders te zorgen. Noriko vraagt hiervoor vrij, en zij neemt de ouders van haar overleden echtgenoot, die ze met vader en moeder aanspreekt, mee met een busreis en verder de stad in.

Intussen besluiten de overige kinderen om het stel naar een badplaats te sturen, om eens "lekker uit te rusten". Ze komen echter in een hotel terecht met allemaal jongelui die lang doorfeesten, en de volgende dag zijn ze dan ook doodop. Zo doodop dat moeder Tomi er duizelig van is. Ze besluiten terug te gaan naar Tokio, maar daar blijken ze niet goed terecht te kunnen aangezien Shige, bij wie ze normaal zouden logeren, veel bezoek zou krijgen. Tomi stelt voor om dan bij Noriko te blijven slapen, maar die woont erg klein, en daarom besluit Shūkichi om langs te gaan bij een oude collega die ook naar Tokio verhuisd is. Ze spreken af de volgende dag naar huis te gaan.

Tijdens de drinkavond heeft Shūkichi het met twee oude collega's over kinderen. Al met al is hij tevreden over wat ze allemaal bereikt hebben, maar toch is er ook duidelijk teleurstelling. Ze drinken vrij stevig. Na de avond drinken belandt vader met zijn collega toch bij Shige, na daar door een wijkagent te zijn afgezet. Daar blijkt Shige nare herinneringen te hebben aan haar vader die, totdat de jongste zus geboren werd, wel vaker te veel dronk.
Tomi spreekt haar zorgen uit tegen Noriko, die na acht jaar nog altijd lijkt te rouwen om haar overleden echtgenoot.

Op de weg terug wordt moeder onwel, en in Osaka blijven ze dan ook een paar dagen logeren bij hun zoon Keizo die daar woont. Maar als ze daarna weer in Onomichi terugkomen, wordt Tomi ernstig ziek. De kinderen komen allemaal naar Onomichi, en moeder overlijdt. Keizo blijkt erg spijt te hebben niet beter voor zijn moeder gezorgd te hebben. Bij de maaltijd na de begrafenis besluit iedereen, behalve Noriko, om alweer terug te keren.

De film eindigt met drie gesprekken. In het eerste, tussen Kyōko en Noriko, verwijt Kyōko de andere kinderen dat ze erg kil zijn en geen gevoel hebben. Vooral Shige, die twee kledingstukken meenam en vertrok, vond ze zeer onaangenaam. Noriko zegt dat ze het hen niet te veel moet kwalijk nemen, omdat de andere kinderen erg druk zijn met hun eigen leven, en dat het nu eenmaal zo gaat met volwassen kinderen. Kyōko wil zo niet worden, en ze wijst er ook op dat Noriko er toch ook nog is. Noriko wil zo ook niet zijn.
Het tweede gesprek is een gesprek tussen Shūkichi en Noriko. Hij zegt dat van al zijn kinderen, zij moeder en hemzelf het best ontvangen heeft op de reis, en hij geeft haar het oude horloge van moeder. Ook hij spreekt zijn zorgen uit, en zegt dat ze moet proberen gelukkig te worden. Noriko zien we daarna huilend in de trein zitten.
Het laatste gesprek gaat tussen Shūkichi en de buurvrouw. Zij zegt dat het voor hem wel moeilijk moet zijn om alleen te zijn. Dat is zo, maar hij zegt er maar aan te moeten wennen.

Thematiek
Ozu beschrijft in deze film op zeer realistische wijze hoe kinderen en ouders, zeker als deze ver weg wonen, uit elkaar groeien. De kinderen lijken het fijn te vinden dat hun ouders er zijn, maar zijn te druk bezig met hun eigen leven en de vraag "Wat doen we met vader en moeder?" lijkt de belangrijkste vraag. Dit gevoel van tot last te zijn speelt ook erg duidelijk bij de ouders. De film is rauw en realistisch in deze ongemakkelijke situatie.

Naast dit verhaal geeft deze film een goede indruk van het leven in Japan in de jaren '50. Het verlies van een kind in de oorlog, het drukke leven en de urbanisatie en veranderende denkbeelden komen naar voren.

Men zou daarnaast ook het enigszins moralistische "Zorg goed voor je ouders, voor het te laat is" als thema voor de film kunnen aanwijzen. Dit wordt door Keizo ook bijna letterlijk zo gezegd. De film is echter expressief van aard en lijkt hierover niet echt te oordelen, maar men kan het er wel uit halen.

In seinem Meisterwerk «Ugetsu monogatari» schildert der Japaner Kenji Mizoguchi die Geschichte von Genjuro, einem Töpfer, und seinem Schwager, dem Bauern Tobei. Die beiden leben mit ihren Frauen in einem kIeinen Dorf, das inmitten eines von Kriegswirren umtosten Gebietes gelegen ist. Und sie haben Ambitionen, die sich die Kriegswirren zunutze machen.

Genjuro möchte mit seinen Töpfen in die Stadt fahren und möglichst rasch vieI GeId verdienen.
Tobei will als Samurai zu Ruhm und Ehre kommen.
Beide setzen aIles aufs SpieI: und verlieren. Das Streben nach Geld und Ruhm, macht Mizoguchi hier deutlich, birgt zwangsläufig den Verlust von inneren Werten mit sich. Genjuro und Tobei machen sich auf einen Weg, der sie immer weiter wegführt von sich selber, der Wunschträumen und Phantomen foIgt und nicht den Spuren der Wirklichkeit.
Unterwegs, auf jener grandiosen Bootspassage, treibt der Tod phantomartig an ihnen vorbei - sie verstehen es nicht, das Zeichen richtig zu deuten. Und so wird der Tod Wirklichkeit.
Genjuro rennt später einer Liebe nach, die er für echter und stärker hält aIs jene zu seiner eigenen, daheim geIassenen Frau. Die Liebe aber, sie entpuppt sich aIs Phantom als Geist einer Iängst verblichenen Prinzessin.

Hildegard wordt abdis van het klooster en door op subtiele wijze haar intelligentie en diplomatie te gebruiken, probeert ze de wetten en regels te veranderen. Later krijgt ze toestemming haar eigen klooster te stichten en start ze met een revolutionaire en humanistische benadering van het geloof.
Componist, wetenschapper, dokter, schrijver, poëet, mysticus, politicus, ecologisch activist.. Hildegard von Bingen was een vrouw die haar tijd ver vooruit was. Haar muziek en literaire en wetenschappelijke werken zijn vandaag de dag nog steeds geliefd en haar invloed op holistische medicijnkunst is groeiende. 

Ze was de eerste vrouw die schreef over vrouwelijke seksualiteit. Eeuwen later werden Dante en Leonardo Da Vinci geïnspireerd door haar werk.

DVD   Waarom Vertrok Bodhi Dharma Naar het Oosten?

Een oude Zen-meester, een onzekere leerling en een weeskind omringd door natuurelementen: Water, vuur, aarde, wind en lucht.

In een klein vervallen klooster, verscholen in de bergen, woont een oude Zen-meester met zijn volgelingen: Kibong, een jonge monnik, die de stad ontvlucht is en Haejin, een kind.

Op een dag doodt Haejin per ongeluk een vogel waardoor een vogelpaar wreed gescheiden wordt. De vogel, die achterblijft, volgt hem op de voet en dat leert Haejin het fundamentele leed van het leven te begrijpen: De dood en het vluchtige van het leven, de verbondenheid en de passies, de zonde en de angst.

Voordat de oude monnik sterft, geeft hij Kibong de opdracht zijn lichaam na zijn sterven te verbranden. Kibong moet de crematie-ceremonie ’s nachts uitvoeren, in de bergen en in zijn eentje.

De vlammen flakkeren de hele nacht op een vernietigen de muur tussen leven en dood, tussen goed en kwaad en dit geeft Kibong een ervaring die woorden overstijgt.

Zen is the inspiring true story of Eihei Dogen, the great 13th century Japanbese Buddhist master. Dogen studied in China and established a monastic practice which emphasizes sitting meditation: he is regardes as the founder of the Soto School of Zen.

From pilgrimages to China to armed monks at war, the  Kamakura Era was a time o upheaval in Japan and saw the beginnings of both the Rinzai and Soto Schools of Zen, and the arrival of tea. The country would never be the same again.

Born in 1200, orphaned at eight, and initiated as a monk at age of fourteen, Dogen is perhaps best known in the west for his texts Instruction to the Cook and a collection of discourses called the Shoh Genzo.

He led a renaissance in practice and doctrine in Japan, and his Zen is the practical implementation of the principle of non-duality. Two key points are: [1] There is no gap between practice and enlightenment; and, [2] Right behaviour in daily life is Buddhism itself.
